Attempting to resurrect his party’s prospects, British police fined Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday for failing to use a seatbelt while filming a social media clip in the backseat of a moving vehicle.
During a trip to the northwest of England, Sunak, who apologized on Thursday for a short error of judgement, posted the footage to Instagram. Other people who observed that he hadn’t buckled up widely shared it.
Later that day, the neighborhood police had promised to look into it. Late on Friday, they announced that an offense had occurred.
This is the second punishment Sunak has gotten from the authorities since they discovered he and former prime minister Boris Johnson had violated the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions the previous year.
After Johnson, Sunak is the second prime minister to have transgressed the law in this way.
The fine serves as yet another source of distraction for Sunak, whose Conservative Party is now polling significantly worse than the opposition Labour Party in the run-up to an election that must take place by no later than January 2025.
The prime minister has apologized and fully accepts that this was an error. Of course, he will pay the stipulated fine Sunak’s Downing Street office released a statement through a spokeswoman.
A 42-year-old male from London was given a penalty notice, according to a release from the police in the county of Lancashire in northern England.
The leveling up efforts the government is implementing to lessen regional inequities were updated in Sunak’s video.
In Britain, failing to use a seatbelt can result in a fine of up to 500 pounds ($620), unless there is an exception, such as when a vehicle is reversing, providing emergency services, or when a passenger is in a cab.
